The Grass" is a story of coming-of-age in the 1950s and the Korean War. Tom Kelly, a young man from Fargo, is expelled from the University of Minnesota for protesting its treatment of its only African-American faculty member at the height of McCarthyism, is dumped by his girlfriend, and joins the army during the Korean War. In his journey he encounters the racism, anti-Semitism, sexism and repression of America in the 50s and experiences love and war.

"The Grass" was a finalist for the Bellwhether Prize for first novels established by Barbara Kingsolver to promote literature in support of social justice.
