National Writers Union - Twin Cities Chapter

We are book authors and writers, freelance and in-house, as varied in experience as we are with our genres. The Twin Cities boasts of many writing groups – but ours is unique. We are a union.

In 1981, the National Writers Union was formed, despite the popular opinion that “you cannot organize freelance writers,” and the result is a union of chapters nationwide, representing its members with contract advice, legal assistance and a network of fellow writers like no other. The Twin Cities Chapter began in 1987 and is one of the strongest in the country.

Farewell from outgoing Steering Committee chair:

Dear fellow writers and readers,

Thank you for all the interest you have had and continue to have about our chapter.

I have stepped down as a president and am no longer on the chapter steering committee. I’m still a member and hope to see some of you at future workshops and events.

For me, the free workshops have been one of my favorite parts of being in the union. We’ve had lots of events, all open to the public. We’ve talked about writing from manuscript to published book; how to find agents and publishers; how to market one’s work; and how to address copyright and other legal issues. I hope the few topics and speakers listed below spark some of you to organize future meetings.

Until then, if you have questions about our chapter, please contact one of the current steering committee members: Mark Connor, Paul Zerby, Tom Parsons, or Katie Read.

See list of previous workshop presenters here.

Steering Committee Positions Available!

Are you looking for work? Do you want to connect with fellow writers?

Here's a good opportunity to network and get to know other writers. The Twin Cities NWU is looking for more members to join our steering committee. We meet monthly, usually an hour before our free workshops.

Steering committee members get to know other writers, and get a chance to show leadership. This helps the group, but it can also help you. You can add this leadership post to your resume, and make new connections that might lead to work.

If you’re interested in learning more about the steering committee, contact a Steering Committee member or come to our next meeting (see below)!
